I'm sending this out a bit early because on the
off-chance you'll be in the Twin Cities next week
and want more, there's an open reading Monday the
14th at The Artists' Quarter in St. Paul -- 408
St. Peter Street -- in the Hamm Building,
downstairs. The reading is at 9:00 p.m.,
following a jazz show by Green, a "burning
post-bop quartet."

So I Read this Mary Oliver Poem
So I read this Mary Oliver poem
To a woman the other night
-- I should've known better --
She cocked her head
Trying to understand
How a grasshopper can fling itself, or why,
Where you would've nodded
She said "that's nice"
Where your gut would've
Smiled, audibly
She wanted me to read another
Where you would've reached
To snatch the book
Wanting your turn
And I'd distract you with Wm. Blake again
Which is why you never got
To read a poem to me
Which is why I read to strangers
And cashiers and students now
Which is why if you were here I'd fill
Your lap with poems
One by one like petals piling up
Until it felt to you like
A bouquet of
Presence and purpose.
