MTU Jazz Factoid
Interesting story about Don Keranen's (our founder of MTU jazz)
creativity in the face of "adversity". In the early 1980's Don
formed one of MTU's best funk combos. They had a regular gig at the
"old" Library Bar (now brew pub). So, naturally they called
themselves "Funk and Wagnalls". Very cool!
After about a year of performing at the Library with F&W, Don got a
very nasty "Cease and Desist" order from the legal team at the real
Funk and Wagnalls (lawyers with nothing better to do and no sense of
humor).
So, Don wrote back, and said that they would comply and that the new
name of the band would be "Funk and WEBSTER'S. Touche and score one
for Tech!!
The answer to yesterday's who is "Newk" question is: tenor sax giant
Sonny Rollins (named because of his resemblance to former Brooklyn
Dodgers pitcher Don Newcome.
Today's Question: What famous trumpeter from Benny Goodman's
Orchestra stated the he:
"felt like a whor% in church"
when Goodman's band was the first "jazz band" to perform at Carnegie
Hall (Jan. 1938)??
