Euphonium Concert, Workshop March 30

HANCOCK, MI - The Finlandia University Finnish American Heritage Center
(FAHC) will present a concert of Finnish music for the euphonium performed
by Mark Carlson at 7 p.m., March 30, 2007. Admission to the concert is by
donation.

Carlson will also offer a master class at 4 p.m., March 30, for anyone who
plays a brass instrument. The one-hour class costs $15 and requires advance
registration. Musicians must bring their own brass instrument.

The euphonium is a brass wind instrument similar to the tuba but with a
somewhat higher pitch and mellower sound.

Mark Carlson began studying the euphonium in high school.  He earned a
bachelor's degree in euphonium from Northwestern University and an advanced
degree in euphonium performance the next year in Oulu, Finland, with Finnish
euphonium artist Jukka Myllys. In August 2004 he took second place in the
Lieksa (Finland) Brass Week Euphonium Competition. This spring he completed
a master's degree in euphonium performance at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. He is presently pursuing a doctoral degree in euphonium
performance at UW-Madison.
