Folksinger James Gordon in Town November 15

HANCOCK, MI – Canadian folksinger, songwriter and musician James Gordon will
present two free community events Wednesday, November 15, 2006, at the
Finlandia University Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC) in Hancock.
Gordon, a successful performance artist who helped found the Canadian
folk group trio Tamarack, has 16 solo albums and countless television and
radio appearances to his credit. His songs explore themes of conscience,
justice and individual liberty. Gordon’s experiences coping with mental
illness in his own family prompted him to become an advocate for mental
health awareness among young people.
Gordon’s first appearance will take place at 1:30 p.m., November 15 at
the FAHC. In a presentation for high school and university students, Gordon
combines his musical and artistic talents to illuminate the facts of mental
illness through song and discussion. The film, “Breaking The Mask” will be
shown. In this 30-minute video production, ten young artists with personal
mental health experience share their stories through music, drama, art,
poetry and photography.
Wednesday evening, November 15, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Gordon will
present a free community concert at the FAHC. The concert will include
selections from his “Songs of Hope” tour featuring songs based on poems and
stories by persons with serious brain disorders.
Gordon’s appearance in the Copper Country is sponsored by the Finlandia
University Campus Enrichment Fund in cooperation with NAMI-Finlandia, the
university’s student-led chapter of the National Alliance for Mental
Illness, and Finlandia’s Human Service Club, BASIC. Additional information
about James Gordon can be found at http://jamesgordon.ca.
Founded in 2006, NAMI-Finlandia joins other affiliates nationwide in
attempting to raise awareness about mental illness. NAMI is the nation’s
largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to improving the
lives of persons living with serious mental illness and their families.
