Hello.
I am a new faculty member at Tech as well as being new to the UP and =20
this list. So, my first post to this wonderful list:
We have a wonderful opportunity here to see a film that has not yet =20
been released commercially. As part of a national campaign of =20
grassroots screenings, I have arranged to bring the film "Before the =20
Music Dies" to the Tech campus for a free screening, to take place =20
this coming Sunday November 12, at 6 pm, in the McArdle Theatre, on =20
the second floor of the Walker Arts and Humanities Center. =20
Refreshments will be served before and after the film. Again, this is =20=
a free event, open to all members of the MTU and greater UP communities.
Here is a description of the film from the filmmakers:
Before the Music Dies Tells the Story of American Music Hanging in =20
the Balance
Is original music drowning in the wake of big label marketing? Will =20
radio ever again be the influential force it once was? Does the =20
=93next big thing=94 in music even have a chance to be heard? =
Filmmakers =20
Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen traveled the country to uncover how =20=
American music arrived at this moment of truth. The answers they =20
found =96 and the promise the future holds =96 make Before the Music =
Dies =20
both riveting and exhilarating.
Revealing interviews with musicians, industry insiders, music writers =20=
and fans shed intense light on the issues. Featured performances =20
from artists spanning genres and generations prove that great music =20
is always out there =96 as long as you know where to look. Before the =20=
Music Dies will renew your passion for great music and inspire you to =20=
fight for its future.
------
I believe the issues the film raises are important ones for all of us =20=
to consider. The "state" of the record industry has a direct impact =20
on the what, who, why, when, and where of that which we hear as music =20=
audiences. In a day and age when, as one interviewee in the film =20
says, neither Ray Charles nor Stevie Wonder would be likely get major =20=
label recording contracts because of they are/were blind (and thus =20
less marketable), we have to ask hard, important questions of both =20
ourselves as consumers of music and the music industry as purveyors =20
or distributors of music (and, perhaps more importantly, as arbiters =20
of aesthetic taste itself).
The screening is sponsored by the Communication and Culture Studies =20
major and the Department of Humanities, with kind support from the =20
Department of Fine Arts.
I will briefly introduce the film, as well as host an informal =20
discussion after the screening.
I would love to see and meet any of you here for this event....
