The 13th annual Copper Harbor Fat Tire Festival mountain bike race &
music fest will be Sunday September 3. The traditional Sunday of
Labor Day weekend event is a great time and a good way to bid farewell
to the summer, Copper Harbor style.
The XC races will begin at 2:00pm with a mass start roll-out
through "downtown" before being cut loose to hit the dirt. Spectator
viewing spots include the bottom of "Paul's Plunge" where a gallery of
fans typically gather to await any endos and bloody wrecks. The
Keweenaw Mountain Lodge will offer some great points of view along
some of the new trails that were developed on their property this
summer, although parking will be somewhat limited. Spectators may
also take a 5-10 minute hike past Grandpa's Barn Bookstore to watch
the racers hit the home-stretch in Wescoat's field, near the finish
line at the Grant Twp. Park.
A double-header of great musical entertainment is on the agenda after
the race had concluded. Back by popular demand, will be a perfomance
with MQT bluegrass boys, Chasin' Steel. They will get the pickin' and
dancing going outside in the park underneath the bigtop ~ 7:00pm,
following the awards presentations. A rockin'/blues perfomance by the
Mojo Perry Band will take the Festival into the early morning hours
begining ~ 10:00pm at Zik's Bar & Grill. Admission to Chasin' Steel
is free and there are no age restrictions in the park. There will be
a $5 admission for non-racers at Zik's and folks must be 21+.
